Note for:   Jesse Scalf,   Oct 1813 -          Index

Individual Note:
Jesse enlisted in the Union Army on August 9, 1863. He was a Corporal in B. Company, 47th Kentucky Volunteer Mounted Infantry. He joined at Irvine, Kentucky. Jesse applied for a pension on August 25, 1883 and it is from his application that we gather considerable information about Jesse. Jesse Scalf was 5'10" tall, of fair complexion and had blue eyes. At the time he applied for his military pension, he was living near Hyden, Kentucky in Leslie County. Leshe Co. was formed from Clay County in 1878. His address was Big Creek in 1866. He indicated on his application that his wife was Elisa (Elizabeth Collins). Jesse's commander in service was Captain Jackson Roberts and he was acting in this capacity when Jesse contracted an illness while engaging the enemy at the battle of Big Hill. He was also ruptured while in service limiting his physical activities thereafter. Jesse had re-enlisted on May 4, 1864 for additional duty. Several friends and former army comrades furnshed affidavits on Jesse's behalf and he was granted his pension which he continued to receive until his death on December 19, 1895. (from )

Note for:   William Scalf,   1795 -          Index

Individual Note:
William must have died very young. Another son, born in 1806 was also named William H Scalf. It was not uncommon to name a child after a deceased sibling.

Individual Note:
BIOGRAPHY: William Scalf was probably born in Wilkes County, North Carolina. William was removed from his home in 1820 by a court order. It seems William's father, John Scalf, Sr., had become indebted to Stephen Gose in Russell County, Virginia. Gose had his friend, John Smythe, Overseer of the Poor for Russell County, write a letter recommending that several of William's brothers in addition to William be apprenticed. This recommendation was made on the basis of alleged unfit conditions in the John Scalf, Sr. home. There is no record to indicate that any one of the Scalf children was actually taken out of the home with the exception of William who was removed and bound out to Gose. In some way, William's father found him and took him home prompting a court action which followed in which Gose charged John Scalf, Sr. in court for unlawfully taking William from his possession. John Scalf, Sr. was acquitted. William died sometime between January 6, 1844 and July 17, 1845. As he was born about 1805; this would put his age at nearly 40 when he died. William probably died in Hawkins County, Tennessee. On January 6, 1844 William Scalf and James Trent witnessed a deed in Hawkins County for the sale of a tract of land along the Clinch River. This area was later included in Hancock County when that county was formed in 1844. In this deed, Alexander Trent sold a parcel of land to John Scalf, Jr. who was William's older brother. William Scalf probably married before he died sometime in 1844 or early 1845. The children listed are probably his children, though this involves some speculation
