Individual Note: Birth: Age is listed as "32" in the 1880 census, which would make his birth year 1848.
Burial: Buried in Jones Cemetery, Sullivan County, Tennessee.
Biography: The American Inventor Samuel Morse (1791-1872) who invented Morse Code used in his electromagnetic telegraph is a fourth cousin,10 times removed to our Isaac Scalf through David S. Scalf’s marriage into Elizabeth Blackburn’s family.
1890 Veterans Schedule handwritten list recorded Isaac Scalf – house # 25, family #25, 16th Civil District, TN with no disabilities incurred noted. Civil War Pension Index records Isaac Scalf of Tennessee 1 Co., US Guard Arty.
1870 Sullivan Co. District 16, TN Census shows Isaac Scalf – 21, a farmer born in TN & wife Nannie M.-18 keeping house, born in VA. They are living next door to Susan E. Glover – 43 widowed, born in VA with Marion – 18 born VA, John – 13 born VA, Mary – 9 born TN & Susan A. – 7 born TN. Beside them are also living William & Amanda Lyon’s family and Landon & Louisa Lyon’s family.
1880 Sullivan Co., District 16, TN Census lists Isaac Scalf – 32 born in TN, occupation farmer with wife Nannie Scalf- 27 keeping house born 1853 in VA with children Edward – 9, Magga – 7 & Charles S. – 3. Living beside them in 1880 were Malachi – 61 born in NC, a farmer & wife Ellen – 28 born in NC with their five children all born in TN Thomas N. – 10, Sarah – 8, Samuel – 6, Malachi – 4 & George W. – 2.

1900 Sullivan Co., District 16, TN Census shows Isaac – 52 and wife Nannie M. – 47 (her father was born in TN & her mother in VA) with children Maggie - 26, Charley – 24 a railroad laborer, Lula – 19, Mary – 15; Ella – 13, McKinley – 3 & grandson Hobart – 3.
Nan Glover Scalf died in 1908 and her daughter, Mary Scalf Lyons, said her mother mourned herself to death 3-years after the untimely passing of son, Ed. Mary asked her mother, “Maw, why do you want to die and leave us?” and Nan replied, “My child, my child, you just don’t understand.” Mary said that on the last visit of her mother, Nan’s, doctor to the house, she smiled and thanked him then told him,“I’m going on a trip and you can’t help me this time”.
1910 Sullivan Co. District 16, TN Census page 28 line # 30 householder # 270 lists a widowed Isaac Scalp – 60 owning his farm with his children Mary - 24, Ella – 18 & McKinley - 12. They were living between his daughter Lula & George Scalf’s family and James W. Woods family.
1920 Sullivan Co. District 16, TN Census lists Isaac Scalf – 66, a farmer residing alone. He was living next door to Browloe & Ethel Lyon Sheets.
The original Isaac Scalf family homeplace was large farm with a white frame shotgun style home on Bunker Hill Road in Sullivan Co., TN whch was purchased by their son McKinley “Ken” Scalf in the 1920s. It is now owned by the Reverend Rocky Maines (confirmed in 2007). After Isaac’s second marriage, he resided off Big Arm Rd.
