He died on 17 December 1936 at age 56 in Endicott, Floyd, Kentucky, USA.3 He was buried in Scalf Cemetery, Coal Run Village, Pike, Kentucky, USA.
Marriage to Adeline Clark
This was a sworn statement by James, not an actual licesne or certificate.
He states the marriage was performed on June 27, 1905 in Scotts, Floyd County, Kentucky, that he was 25 at the time, and Adeline Clark was 30, meaning her birth would have been about 1875. He also reports this was his first marriage and her second marriage, indicating that "Clark" was probably not her maiden name.
Several people have been quick to assume Adeline Clark and Angeline Collins are the same person, but I have a few of problems with this assumption:
1) James would probably know his wife's first name. In subsequent census records, Anjeline's name was recorded as Angie.
2) Angeline was born in 1887 - 7 years younger than James, not 5 years older. I don't think James would have been that wrong about her age at the time of marriage.
3) Also, Angeline would have been only 18 in 1905 - too young to have had a previous marriage.
4) Angeline's first known child was William Melvin Scalf, b. 1911. It would have been highly unusual for the couple to remain childless for 6 years and then suddenly begin to have 5 children in a close span of only 6 years (yougest, Nora, b. 1917.)
